IEC Energy completes 2MW biomass boiler removal

IEC Energy’s install team has recently completed the successful removal of a 2MW biomass boiler for PET UK at their site in Dumfries; a complex lift and logistics job that required careful planning, close coordination, and a strong focus on safety.

A heavy lift, handled safely

The boiler had a gross weight of 36 tonnes, with an 18-metre flue and a range of associated components that also needed to be dismantled and extracted. Working alongside specialist crane contractors, the IEC team planned the operation step-by-step to ensure the removal could be completed smoothly and without disruption.

Removed through the open roof

Because of the size of the equipment and the constraints of the building, the removal was carried out through the open roof. The team lifted out:

  • the biomass boiler
  • the 18m flue
  • all associated parts
  • the fuel feed system

Using an open-roof lift approach allowed the team to remove large sections efficiently, while keeping the work controlled and reducing the need for extensive internal handling.

Ready for its next chapter

Once removed, the boiler was prepared for transport and moved south for re-installation, where it will be brought back into service at its new location.

This was a great example of the kind of work IEC’s install team delivers; combining practical engineering, safe lifting operations, and the coordination needed to manage major plant moves from start to finish.
